Business Card Artwork Guide UK: Bleed, Safe Area, CMYK & Resolution

A practical checklist for preparing clean, print-ready business card artwork before upload.

Quick setup: our standard finished size is 85 × 55mm. Add 3mm bleed on every edge, giving a full artwork size of 91 × 61mm.

Set the document to the correct size

Build the card at the final finished size rather than designing a small file and enlarging it later. For our standard cards, that means 85 × 55mm before bleed.

Add 3mm bleed

Any background colour, image or graphic that should reach the edge needs to extend through the bleed area. This helps prevent thin white edges after trimming.

Keep important content inside the safe area

Names, phone numbers, email addresses, logos and QR codes should sit comfortably away from the cut line. A practical safe margin helps protect important content from normal finishing tolerance.

Use CMYK colour where possible

RGB colours can look different once converted for print. Preparing the file in CMYK gives you a more realistic view of how the final printed colour may reproduce.

Use high-quality logos and images

Vector logos are ideal because they stay sharp at any size. For photographic elements, use high-resolution originals rather than screenshots or images copied from social media.

Check small text

Business cards are viewed up close, so small type needs to remain crisp and readable. Avoid extremely thin fonts, very low-contrast text or tiny contact details that only look comfortable when zoomed in on screen.

QR codes need breathing room

Keep QR codes sharp, high contrast and away from the trim. Leave clear space around the code so phone cameras can identify it reliably.

Front and back orientation

For double-sided cards, supply a clear front and back with consistent orientation. Check that the reverse will read the correct way when the card is turned over.

Best file format

PDF is usually the safest option because it preserves layout, vector artwork and text more reliably. High-resolution JPEG can also work where the artwork is correctly prepared.
