Correx and Foamex sign boards printed in Manchester
We print rigid sign boards in-house at our unit in Denton, Greater Manchester, on two materials: 5mm Correx (fluted polypropylene) and 5mm Foamex (PVC foam board). Both cost the same, £7 per square foot with a £2.99 minimum, so the only question is which material suits the place your sign is going.
Correx or Foamex: the short answer
Choose Correx for temporary outdoor signs: property boards, site notices, event directions, election and fence signs. It is light, waterproof and easy to cable-tie. Choose Foamex for signs people see up close: shop and office signs, reception boards, menus, point of sale and exhibition panels. It has a smooth, solid surface that looks more finished. Our Correx vs Foamex guide goes through specific jobs one by one.
| Correx | Foamex | |
|---|---|---|
| Material | Fluted polypropylene | Rigid PVC foam board |
| Thickness | 5mm | 5mm |
| Best place | Outdoors, short to medium term | Indoors or sheltered spots |
| Surface | Fine flute lines visible close up | Smooth and solid |
| Recycling | Polypropylene, code 5, widely recycled | PVC, limited recycling |
| Price | £7 per sq ft | £7 per sq ft |
Why 5mm?
Many online printers sell Correx at 3.5mm or 4mm. Every board we print is 5mm, which is stiffer, so it bends less in the wind and sits flatter on a fence or a wall.

Which board size for which job?
| Size | Typical uses |
|---|---|
| A4 | Door and window notices, opening hours, private parking and no-entry signs, desk and counter signs |
| A3 | Gate and fence notices, indoor wayfinding, small site safety signs, reserved parking, menus |
| A2 | Event and car park arrows, shop window signs, reception and office signs, site rules boards |
| B2 | When A2 is too small and A1 too big: notice boards, poster-style displays, larger wayfinding |
| A1 | For Sale and To Let boards (the largest standard size within the 0.5 m² residential limit), event signs, site entrance signs |
| B1 | Commercial property boards, exhibition panels, fence and hoarding advertising |
| A0 | Building site boards, commercial To Let boards, roadside and fence advertising, large exhibition panels |
| Custom | Fitting an existing frame, hoarding panel or A-board, long thin fascia-style signs, any odd size |
Each size is also available in Foamex at the same price.
Which size is allowed for my sign?
In England, many temporary signs can go up without applying for consent, but only within size limits set by the Town and Country Planning (Control of Advertisements) Regulations 2007. A residential For Sale or To Let board can be up to 0.5 m², and an A1 board is 0.4996 m², so A1 is the largest standard size that is allowed. Signs for a local non-commercial event, such as a school fair or church fete, can be up to 0.6 m², which A1 also fits. A building site board can be up to 2 m² near a road, so an A0 board fits comfortably. Our sign board rules guide covers timings, lamp posts and the exceptions.
How big should the text be?
A common rule for signs is 1 inch of letter height for every 10 feet someone will read it from, which is about 25mm for every 3 metres. A board read from across a road, roughly 10 metres away, needs letters around 83mm tall. That is why a short message on A1 or A0 works better on a roadside than a busy layout on A3. See our board size and price guide for what fits on each size.
Eyelets and drilled holes
Every board can have eyelets or drilled holes in all four corners or the two top corners, at no extra cost. Eyelets suit cable ties on fences and railings. Drilled holes suit screws on walls and posts.
